Technician vs Technologist Exams at DHA: The Quick Answer
Many DHA allied health titles come in two grades, and each grade has its own exam code and its own pass mark. In the 12 pairs below, the higher grade (technologist, therapist or dietitian) has a pass mark 5 points higher in 9 pairs. Three pairs have the same pass mark: Medical Laboratory, Physiotherapy and Central Sterile Services. Most pairs use the same format, 150 questions in 3 hours at USD 240. Operation Theatre uses 100 questions in 2 hours at USD 180 for both grades.
| Area | Lower grade (code, title, pass mark) | Higher grade (code, title, pass mark) | Difference | One bank covers both |

All figures are from the DHA CBT Guideline (September 2026). DHA shows Pass or Fail only and does not share your score. The UAE allows 3 attempts in total across DHA, DOH, MOHAP and SHA (PQR clause 1.5.4), so choose the right grade before you book. For every DHA pass mark, see the full table .
Start here: open the bank for your title and take its free mock, for example Radiographer or Medical Laboratory Technologist. Our questions are original, not recalled.
Which Grade Do You Apply For?
Your grade comes from the title in the Unified PQR, which depends on your qualification and experience. It is not a choice based on which exam looks easier. We have not verified the qualification thresholds for each grade, so check the PQR section for your title and use the professional title classifier . The title on your application must match your certificate and your exam.
Three points help when you are on the border between two grades:
- Check the code in Sheryan. The PQR list shows "code to confirm" for several lower-grade titles, such as Radiography Technician, Physiotherapy Technician, Occupational Therapy Assistant, Operation Theatre Technician, Prosthetics and Orthotics Technician, Respiratory Therapy Technician and Nutritionist. The DHA CBT Guideline (September 2026) lists codes for all of them, so confirm in Sheryan.
- A lower-title attempt exists. PQR clause 1.5.7 allows one extra attempt for a lower title if you meet that title's requirements. This can help if you do not pass the higher grade, but it is not automatic and you must apply.
- Your licence scope follows the title. A technician licence and a technologist licence are different. Do not choose the lower exam only to improve your chance of passing, because it may limit your scope of practice.
Read our guides for radiographers , laboratory staff , physiotherapists , respiratory therapists and occupational therapists .
How the DHA Allied Health Exam Works, From Booking to Result
Technician and technologist exams share one process. Only the code, the pass mark and, for Operation Theatre, the length differ. All 24 codes in the main table are computer-based (CBT). The booking steps are in the booking section below, so this section covers exam day and pacing.
Exam day, step by step
Arrive 30 minutes early with the same passport you registered. If your passport name does not match Sheryan, tell DHA at least 5 days before the exam, because DHA does not cover the cost of a rebooking. At check-in, Prometric staff ask you to show your arms and ankles, empty your pockets and pass a hand-held metal detector. They also take your picture, and fingerprints where the centre uses a scanner.
The 3 hours include registration, the introduction and the exam itself, so your real testing time is shorter. DHA does not describe breaks or permitted items, so read the Prometric rules for your centre. Our Prometric centres guide lists locations. You can reschedule up to 5 calendar days before the exam, and a no-show does not count as a failed attempt, but the fee is lost.
Pacing: time per question
| Exam | Questions | Time | Average per question | Suggested first pass |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Most allied codes | 150 | 3 hours | 72 seconds | About 60 seconds, leaving roughly 30 minutes for hard questions |
| Operation Theatre (OPE6112, OPE6113) | 100 | 2 hours | 72 seconds | About 60 seconds, leaving roughly 20 minutes |
The suggested first pass is our advice, not a DHA rule. Read the last line of the question first, remove two options, choose, and move on. DHA does not publish how unanswered items are scored, so answer every question. DHA shows Pass or Fail in Sheryan, normally within 2 working days, plus a Prometric Learning Outcome letter that describes general strengths and weaknesses. See the DHA exam overview and the DHA pass mark table.
Check Your Level Before You Book
Before you pay Prometric USD 240, find out where you stand. Take the free mock for your title, for example Radiographer, Respiratory Therapist or Medical Laboratory Technologist. It is timed, it is scored against your own pass mark, and it breaks your result down by domain.
If you score at least 10 points above the pass mark of your code on two timed papers, you are close to ready. If you do not, work through the full bank from the exam-prep page. If you are unsure which grade or which exam applies to you, send us your qualification and experience through the assessment form. We will tell you which title and which exam your documents point to before you book, so that none of your three UAE attempts is wasted.
Other Paired Titles at DHA
The same pattern appears in other allied groups. In the laboratory sciences, the clinical scientist exams have a much higher pass mark than the technologist exams.
| Area | Lower grade | Higher grade | Bank |
|---|---|---|---|
| Audiology | AUD4311 Audiology Assistant - 50% | AUD4312 Audiologist - 55% | Audiologist bank |
| Dental laboratory | DLT5522 Dental Lab Aide - 50% | DLT5521 Dental Lab Technician - 55% | Dental Lab Technician bank |
| Clinical biochemistry | BIC5661 Technologist - 50% | BIC5662 Clinical Scientist - 65% | Clinical Biochemistry bank |
| Hematology | MTH4612 Technologist - 55% | MTH4611 Clinical Scientist - 65% | Hematology bank |
| Medical microbiology | MIC5691 Technologist - 55% | MIC5692 Clinical Scientist - 65% | Microbiology bank |
| Pharmacy | PHT5451 Pharmacy Technician - 55% | PHO5481 Pharmacist - 60% | Pharmacy Technician bank and Pharmacist bank |
The pharmacy pair has separate banks because the syllabus is different. Read our pharmacist exam preparation guide .
Technician and Technologist Titles With No CBT
Not every technician or technologist title has a CBT. In the Unified PQR list, these allied titles map to a DHA oral assessment because they are not in the CBT list: Cardiovascular Technologist and Technician (cath lab, echo, vascular), MRI Technologist, Sonographer, Nuclear Medicine Technologist, EEG Technician, Electro-Neurodiagnostics Technologist, Radiotherapy Technologist and Technician, Sleep Technologist, Allied Health Technologist and Technician (endoscopy and urology), and Phlebotomist. Note that ECG Technician and ECG Technologist do have CBT codes.
See our guide to DHA titles that get an oral instead of a CBT for the format and counts. For phlebotomists, read the phlebotomist licence guide .
Technician vs Technologist in Saudi Arabia and Qatar
Saudi Arabia. SCFHS uses classification exams with technician and specialist grades. All are 150 questions in 3 hours. The specialist exam is 60% and the technician exam is 55% in most pairs.
| SCFHS area | Technician grade | Specialist grade |
|---|---|---|
| Anesthesia | Anesthesiology Technician - 55% | Anesthesia Technology Specialist - 60% |
| Audiology | Audiology Technician - 55% | Audiology Specialist - 60% |
| Dental hygiene | Dental Hygiene Technician - 55% | Dental Hygiene Specialist - 60% |
| Dental laboratory | Dental Laboratory Technician - 55% | Dental Laboratory Specialist - 60% |
| Occupational therapy | Occupational Therapy Technician - 55% | Occupational Therapy Specialist - 60% |
| Physiotherapy | Physiotherapy Technician - 55% | Physiotherapy Specialist - 60% |
| Prosthetics and orthotics | Prosthetics Technician - 55% | Prosthetics and Orthotics Specialist - 60% |
| Sterilisation | Sterilization Technician - 55% | Sterilization Specialist - 60% |
| Optometry | Optometry Technician - 55% | Optometrist Specialist - 60% |
Saudi Arabia also lists Radiography Technician (55%), Respiratory Therapy Technician (55%), Laboratory Technician (55%) and Electrocardiograph Technician (55%) with no matching specialist exam in the same list. SCFHS also lists newer licensure exams for radiologic technology (SRTLE, pass score 530), respiratory care (SRCLE, 542) and laboratory specialists (SLLE, 530).
Qatar. DHP sets one pass mark per scope. Lab Technologist and Lab Technician are both 50%, and Radiology Technologist and Radiology Technician are both 50%. DHP counts down: a technologist exam qualifies for the technician title. You have five attempts per scope, so a technologist keeps five attempts even after failing the technician exam. Read the DHA vs SCFHS vs QCHP comparison .
Kuwait. The Kuwait MOH Lab Technician exam is 150 questions in 170 minutes with a 60% pass mark, delivered by Prometric. Most other allied titles have no published specification, so confirm yours. See the Kuwait MOH exam page.
Oman. Oman's published allied exams in our data are the OEAP (assistant pharmacists) and OEDIET (dietitians): 100 questions in 150 minutes, 55% pass mark, USD 200 each. Check the MOH Oman exam page for others.
DOH, MOHAP and SHA. These regulators publish no question counts, durations or pass marks for these titles in the documents we reviewed, so the DHA figures here do not apply to them. Confirm your exam, and read the DHA vs DOH vs MOHAP comparison. The SCFHS licensure exams (SRTLE and SLLE 530, SRCLE 542) report a scaled score on a 200-800 scale, with 200 questions in two parts of 100. See also the QCHP exam page.
What Each Exam Covers: Domains and High-Yield Traps
One Neelim bank covers both grades of a title, so these domains apply to the technician and the technologist code. Weights come from our blueprints, and those marked as estimates are only a guide. DHA does not publish domain weights for these exams.
| Bank | Largest domains | High-yield trap |
|---|---|---|
| Radiographer | Positioning and procedures (about 25%); radiation protection (about 15%); patient care (about 15%); image quality (about 12%) | Mixing named projections, such as Stecher for the scaphoid and Grashey for the glenoid. Learn body part, central ray and name together. |
| Medical Laboratory | Quality and safety (about 20%); chemistry (about 18%); hematology (about 15%); microbiology (about 13%); immunohematology (about 10%) | Westgard rules: know which rule signals random error and which signals systematic error. Compatibility rules for plasma and red cells run in opposite directions. |
| Physiotherapist | Musculoskeletal, neurological and special populations (about 12% each); electrotherapy and exercise (about 10% each) | Choosing a technique before reading the stage of healing. Forgetting contraindications such as metal, pacemakers and malignancy. |
| Respiratory Therapist | Mechanical ventilation (about 13%); assessment (about 10%); safety and ethics (about 10%); blood gases (about 8%) | Changing the wrong ventilator setting. Oxygenation and ventilation are controlled by different settings. Calling a gas compensated when only one value has moved. |
| Occupational Therapist | Evaluation (about 11%); clinical reasoning, occupation-based intervention and professional practice (about 10% each) | Choosing an impairment exercise when the question asks for an occupation-based goal. |
| Operation Theatre | Asepsis and sterilisation (about 18%); instruments, positioning and anaesthesia assistance (about 15% each) | Picking speed over the sterile field when the two conflict. |
| Anesthesia | Machine, breathing systems and gas supply (about 18%); airway equipment (about 16%); monitoring (about 14%) | Skipping the machine check sequence. |
| Prosthetics and Orthotics | Lower limb prosthetics (about 18%); biomechanics and gait (about 16%); lower limb orthotics (about 14%) | Gait deviations: link each to its likely alignment or fit cause. |
| Central Sterile Services | Decontamination and steam sterilisation (about 18% each); inspection and packaging (about 15%) | Confusing what each indicator proves. |
| Dialysis | Adequacy (about 18%); water treatment and dialysate (about 15%); machine monitoring (about 15%) | Treating water quality as a minor topic. |
| ECG | Arrhythmias (about 18%); lead placement and artefacts (about 15%); ischaemia patterns (about 13%) | Reading a lead-placement error as a heart problem. |
| Clinical Dietitian | Assessment, diabetes and cardiometabolic, renal and GI therapy, and enteral and parenteral nutrition (about 15% each) | Applying a general diet to a patient with a renal or hepatic restriction. |
Across all of them, safety and equipment questions (infection control, radiation or electrical safety, patient identification) are the cheapest marks. Do not leave them to the last week.
An 8-Week Study Plan for Either Grade
This plan assumes about 10 to 12 hours a week while you work. Study to the higher grade of your title, then sit the grade you applied for.
| Week | Focus | What to do | Check at the end |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Baseline | Confirm your code and pass mark. Take the free mock untimed and read every rationale. List your three weakest domains. | Written list of weak domains |
| 2-3 | Two largest domains | Do 40 to 50 questions per domain and review rationales. Redo mistakes after two days. | At least 65% on both |
| 4 | Equipment and procedures | Draw steps, projections, circuits or protocols from memory. | No repeated errors in a topic |
| 5 | Safety and patient care | Infection control, radiation or electrical safety, consent, documentation, emergencies. | At least 75% on safety |
| 6 | Weak domains | Use new questions only, so you test understanding and not memory. | Within 10 points of strong domains |
| 7 | Timed paper 1 | Sit the full paper in one block (150 in 3 hours, or 100 in 2 hours for Operation Theatre). Review by domain next day. | 10 points above pass mark |
| 8 | Timed paper 2, rest | Fix last gaps, check your passport name and booking, rest the day before. | Paper 2 at least as good as paper 1 |
If paper 1 in week 7 is below target, move the exam date. Rescheduling up to 5 calendar days ahead costs a centre fee, but a failed attempt costs USD 240 and one of your three UAE attempts. See also the first-attempt study plan.
Five Practice Questions With Answers
These are Neelim practice examples written for this guide. They are not real exam questions, and DHA does not publish its questions.
1. Radiography. Standard wrist views look normal, but a scaphoid fracture is suspected. Which additional projection helps most?
- A. Lateral elbow
- B. PA wrist with ulnar deviation
- C. AP forearm
- D. Carpal tunnel view only
Answer: B. Ulnar deviation (the Stecher projection) elongates the scaphoid, so a waist fracture is easier to see.
2. Medical laboratory. Two consecutive control results are both more than 2 standard deviations above the mean. What does this suggest?
- A. 1-3s rule, random error
- B. 2-2s rule, systematic error
- C. R-4s rule, random error
- D. No rule is broken
Answer: B. Two results on the same side of the mean point to a shift, for example in calibration or reagent, not a one-off mistake.
3. Respiratory care. A blood gas shows pH 7.30, PaCO2 60 mmHg and HCO3 26 mmol/L. What is the interpretation?
- A. Metabolic acidosis
- B. Acute respiratory acidosis
- C. Respiratory alkalosis
- D. Normal gas
Answer: B. Low pH with high PaCO2 means a respiratory cause. Bicarbonate is almost normal, so the kidneys have not compensated yet, which fits an acute change.
4. Central sterile services. Which method gives the most direct evidence that a steam load was sterilised?
- A. External tape colour change
- B. A chemical indicator on the outside of the tray
- C. A biological indicator
- D. The cycle printout alone
Answer: C. A biological indicator contains resistant spores, so it tests whether the process kills organisms. Tape and chemical indicators show only that conditions were reached.
5. ECG. Where are electrodes V1 and V2 placed?
- A. Fourth intercostal space, right and left of the sternum
- B. Fifth intercostal space, mid-clavicular line
- C. Second intercostal space, right and left of the sternum
- D. Left anterior axillary line
Answer: A. Misplaced precordial leads are a common cause of false patterns, so check placement before you read the trace.
For more free questions, open the question page for your title: Radiographer, Medical Laboratory Technologist, Respiratory Therapist, or the full list.

Which Neelim Bank Covers Which Code
One bank prepares you for both codes. For example, the Radiographer bank also prepares you for Radiography Technician (RAD5622). Aim at least 10 points above your own code's pass mark on two timed papers.
| Bank | Main DHA code | Also prepares for | Free mock |
|---|---|---|---|
| Radiographer | RAD5152 | RAD5622 Radiography Technician | Mock |
| Medical Laboratory Technologist | LAB5631 | LAB5601 Medical Laboratory Technician | Mock |
| Physiotherapist | PHY5121 | PHY4011 Physiotherapy Technician | Mock |
| Respiratory Therapist | RES5882 | RES5881 Respiratory Technician | Mock |
| Occupational Therapist | ORA5562 | ORA5563 Occupational Therapy Assistant | Mock |
| Operation Theatre Technologist | OPE6113 | OPE6112 Operation Theatre Technician | Mock |

| Clinical Dietitian | NUT4112 | NUT4111 Nutritionist | Mock |
Why Candidates Fail and What to Do After a Fail
DHA does not publish candidate results by title, so we cannot say how many people fail. These are the causes we see most often in allied health candidates, based on what the exam asks and how the process works:
- Studying for the wrong grade. A technologist who prepares only technician-level content misses the depth the higher mark needs.
- Using recalled papers. DHA prohibits sharing questions and treats detected cheating as a fail that can lead to blacklisting.
Attempt rules by regulator
| Regulator | Attempts | Waiting time | Result format |
|---|---|---|---|
| DHA | 3 in total across DHA, DOH, MOHAP and SHA (PQR 1.5.4). After three fails, one final attempt elsewhere or a fourth DHA attempt on a declaration (1.5.5). Blocked at DHA for 2 years after a third fail | None. You can rebook when an appointment is free | Pass or Fail |
| DOH | Same UAE total. DOH's own standard bars a re-sit for 12 months after a third failure | 3 months after a failed attempt | Pass or Fail |
| MOHAP | Same UAE total. MOHAP's card caps you at 3 per category | Not published | Not published here, confirm with MOHAP |
| SHA | Same UAE total. You must declare attempts made elsewhere | Not published | Confirm with SHA |
| SCFHS | Up to 4 a year for the licensure exams, until you pass | Not in the same testing window | Scaled score, 200-800 |
Qatar allows 5 attempts per scope, Kuwait 3 at least 6 weeks apart, and Oman states no maximum. NHRA in Bahrain has published an attempts rule only for pharmacy, so confirm yours.
After a fail, sit a timed mock, rank your domains, rework the three weakest from rationales, and rebook only when you score 10 points above the pass mark.
If you have used all three UAE attempts, there are routes back. PQR 1.5.7 allows one extra attempt for a lower title if you meet its requirements, and 1.5.8 gives three new attempts after a new recognised qualification or two years of clinical experience. Read the UAE retake guide and the comeback guide.
After You Pass: Registration, Activation and Jobs
A pass is not yet a licence. The next steps follow the DHA licensing manual:
- Complete DataFlow. DHA issues your registration once your primary source verification (PSV) report is positive. If DataFlow is still open, read the DataFlow guide and check your good standing certificate against the good standing certificate guide.
- Use Get Registered. DHA states it processes this step in 5 working days.
- Find a facility. The registration is valid for one year and is not a permit to practise. A licensed health facility must activate it into a licence through its own Sheryan account.
- Have insurance. You need medical malpractice insurance. Our guide to professional insurance in the UAE explains the options.
If nobody activates the registration within the year, you must renew it, and you can apply within 90 days before expiry. Otherwise it is cancelled and you may have to start again. DHA publishes no processing time for activation, so ask your employer. Read what to do after passing the DHA exam, and see pay levels in the radiographer and medical laboratory salary guides. For new titles that may affect your job search, see new allied health professions in the GCC.
How Neelim Helps
Neelim builds one original bank for each allied title, with a timed mock, rationales and a domain breakdown. Find your title in the table above, take the free mock and compare your score with the pass mark of your own code. Then work through the full bank.
- Radiography: Radiographer bank and free mock
- Laboratory: Medical Laboratory Technologist bank and free mock
- Rehabilitation: Physiotherapist, Occupational Therapist and Respiratory Therapist banks
- Theatre and technical: Operation Theatre, Anesthesia, CSS, Dialysis, ECG and Prosthetics and Orthotics
- Nutrition: Clinical Dietitian bank
Not sure you are eligible for the title you want? Use the licence eligibility checker or ask for a personal check through the eligibility assessment. See all question banks and the DHA exam overview. For titles assessed orally, see consultant oral preparation and our oral titles guide. We cannot promise a pass, and we do not sell recalled questions.
Frequently Asked Questions
Usually the pass mark is 5 points higher, in 9 of the 12 pairs we compared. Medical Laboratory, Physiotherapy and Central Sterile Services pairs have the same pass mark. The content and depth also differ, so study to your own grade.
50% for LAB5601 Medical Laboratory Technician and 50% for LAB5631 Medical Laboratory Technologist. Both have 150 questions in 3 hours and a USD 240 fee.
55% for RAD5152 Radiographer and 50% for RAD5622 Radiography Technician. Both have 150 questions in 3 hours and a USD 240 fee.
No. OPE6112 Technician and OPE6113 Technologist have 100 questions in 2 hours with a USD 180 fee. The pass marks are 50% and 55%.
The PQR (clause 1.5.7) allows one extra attempt for a lower title if you meet that title's requirements. It is not automatic, so apply to DHA and ask. All UAE attempts are counted together.
Our plan uses 8 weeks at about 10 to 12 hours a week, ending with two full timed papers. DHA publishes no recommended study time. If you score at least 10 points above your pass mark on two timed papers earlier, you can book earlier.
There is no waiting period at DHA, so you can rebook when an appointment is free, and you pay the fee again. You have 3 attempts in total across DHA, DOH, MOHAP and SHA. After three fails you may get one final attempt elsewhere. Rework your weakest domains before you rebook.
We cannot confirm that. DOH, MOHAP and SHA do not publish question counts, durations or pass marks for these titles in the documents we reviewed, so do not assume the DHA figures apply. Confirm the format with the regulator.
Finish DataFlow so your PSV report is positive, then use Get Registered, which DHA processes in 5 working days. A licensed facility must activate the registration into a licence within one year, and you need medical malpractice insurance.
No. Sonographer, MRI Technologist, Cardiovascular Technician and EEG Technician are not in the CBT list, so DHA assesses them orally. Confirm your title on Sheryan.
