Sultan Qaboos Hospital in Salalah is the Oman Ministry of Health's governorate hospital for Dhofar and the main government hospital in the south of the country. The Ministry dates it to 1976 and lists about 515 beds including its cardiac centre. It is the referral point for the region's primary health care centres and for patients from Dhofar's wilayats.
The hospital covers the main specialties under one roof. Internal medicine includes neurology, nephrology, chest medicine, endocrinology, gastroenterology, psychiatry and dermatology; general surgery includes neurosurgery, orthopaedics, urology, ophthalmology and ENT. It also runs obstetrics and gynaecology, paediatrics, cardiology, cardiothoracic surgery, intensive care, emergency services, radiology, laboratories and pharmacy. A separate cardiac centre has its own adult and paediatric outpatient clinics, catheterisation and cardiac imaging.
Sultan Qaboos Hospital is busy. The Ministry reports about 63,000 adult emergency visits, 49,000 paediatric emergency visits and 7,000 obstetric emergency visits a year, with roughly 27,800 admissions and 279,000 outpatient visits. It is recognised at level two of the WHO Patient Safety Friendly Hospital Initiative.
A replacement hospital is being built in Salalah. In June 2026 the Ministry's Director General of Projects and Engineering Services said the new Sultan Qaboos Hospital, a seven-storey, 700-bed building on a 100,000 square metre site, had passed 90% completion and was expected to begin operating in the last quarter of 2026. It is planned to include emergency care, imaging, chemotherapy, dialysis, burns treatment, rehabilitation and adult, paediatric and neonatal intensive care.
The hospital's medical staff come from Oman and many other countries, including India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Egypt, Sudan, the Philippines and Sri Lanka.
