  • You get 72 seconds per question, the pace of a 150-question paper in 3 hours. The timer runs in your browser and ends the sitting when it reaches zero.
  • Your score is set against the 55% SCFHS pass mark, the published figure for this exam. No other number is invented: there is no percentile and no pass probability.
  • At the end you see your score, your pace per question, every domain ranked weakest first, and the worked answer and source for all 25 questions.
  • You can mark each answer “sure” or “not sure”. Wrong answers you were sure about are shown first, because they are the ones you would not stop to check in the real exam.
  • Your last result is saved in your own browser only, so you can come back and compare. Nothing is sent to us.

What the real Public Health Technician licensing exam looks like

The Public Health Technician exam is a computer-based multiple-choice paper, published by one regulator: SCFHS (pass mark 55%). Every regulator's format, pass mark and fee is in the table below; confirm yours before booking.

Pass marks at a glance: exam codes and pass marks by regulator for every written exam in one sourced table.

Before you can book the exam at all you need Dataflow primary source verification of your degree, licence and experience, which typically runs several weeks. Candidates often underestimate this and end up sitting the exam sooner after study than they planned. Check where you stand with our free eligibility checker or confirm whether your title even requires an exam using the Prometric exam checker.

You get three attempts in total across all UAE authorities, not three each, under the Unified Professional Qualification Requirements. At roughly AED 880 per attempt, plus the licensing delay each failure adds to your visa and start date, the cost of going in underprepared is not really the exam fee.

How to use your mock score

These bands are set against the 55% SCFHS pass mark and match the verdict on your result screen. On 25 questions, a score near the pass mark has a 95% margin of error of about ±20 points, so treat the band as a direction, not a forecast.

Below 50%

Below the line

On this sample you would likely fall short of the 55% pass mark today. Do not book yet. Start with your two weakest domains from the result, then sit full-length papers until you clear the line with room to spare.

50% to 64%

Close to the line

A few questions decide it. On a 150-question paper, every 1% is one or two questions, so drill your weakest domains and build a margin on timed papers before you book.

65% and above

On track

Clear of the pass mark on this sample. 25 questions is a small sample, so confirm it over full-length timed papers before you book: stamina and pacing fail candidates who know the material.

Getting an honest score

  1. 1Sit it cold, once. Do not look anything up. A diagnostic you help yourself through tells you nothing. The number you get is only useful if it is honest.
  2. 2Read every rationale, especially the ones you got right. Getting a question right by elimination is not the same as knowing it. The worked reasoning is free, whether or not you buy anything.
  3. 3Work on your weakest domain first. The breakdown orders your domains worst first for exactly this reason. Studying what you are already good at feels productive and moves nothing.
  4. 4Re-sit under full exam conditions later. The real paper is much longer than 25 questions and stamina matters. The full bank's 3 to 6 papers are written for exactly this.

A worked Public Health Technician exam question

Every question in the mock and in the paid bank is written to this standard: a clinical stem, four plausible options and the reasoning for the answer, with its source.

Biostatistics and Health Informatics Concepts and Principles

A health centre records the waiting time in minutes of 11 patients: 12, 15, 15, 18, 20, 22, 25, 30, 35, 40 and 120. Which measure best describes the typical waiting time?

  1. AThe median, 22 minutesCorrect
  2. BThe mean, 32 minutes
  3. CThe mode, 15 minutes
  4. DThe range, 108 minutes

Why: The median is the middle value of ordered data and is not pulled by the single extreme wait of 120 minutes. The mean is inflated by that outlier, the mode only reports the most repeated value, and the range describes spread, not a typical value.

  1. Question 1 · Environmental Health

Which fraction of airborne particulate matter is most likely to penetrate deep into the lungs and reach the alveoli?

    1. APM2.5, particles of 2.5 micrometres or less
    2. BPM10, particles between 2.5 and 10 micrometres
    3. CTotal suspended particles larger than 10 micrometres
    4. DCoarse dust settling within a few metres of its source
    Show answer and explanation

Correct answer: A. PM2.5, particles of 2.5 micrometres or less

Fine particles of 2.5 micrometres or less pass the upper airway and reach the alveoli, which is why they carry the greatest health burden. Larger fractions are mostly trapped in the nose and throat or settle out of the air.

Reference: WHO, Global Air Quality Guidelines (2021)

  2. Question 2 · Epidemiology Concepts and Methods

A study finds that people who carry matches have more lung cancer than those who do not. Smoking is linked to both match-carrying and lung cancer. What explains the association?

    1. ASelection bias from volunteer participation
    2. BLead-time bias from earlier detection
    3. CConfounding by smoking
    4. DRecall bias from the cases
    Show answer and explanation

Correct answer: C. Confounding by smoking

A third factor associated with both the exposure and the outcome, without being on the causal path, produces a false association, which is confounding. Selection, lead-time and recall bias arise from how participants are chosen, detected or questioned, not from a shared cause.

Reference: Gordis, Epidemiology, 6th ed. (2019)

  3. Question 3 · Food and Water Safety

A factory prepares cooked chicken for sandwiches: receiving, chilled storage, cooking, cooling, slicing and packing. For the hazard of Salmonella, which step is the critical control point?

    1. AReceiving the raw chicken from the supplier with a temperature check on the vehicle
    2. BChilled storage of the raw chicken
    3. CSlicing the cooked chicken with clean knives and gloves before packing
    4. DCooking to a defined core temperature for a set time
    Show answer and explanation

Correct answer: D. Cooking to a defined core temperature for a set time

A critical control point is the step where the hazard can be eliminated or reduced to an acceptable level, and later steps cannot do this for Salmonella. Receiving and storage are prerequisite controls that only limit growth, and slicing could only add recontamination.

Reference: Codex Alimentarius, General Principles of Food Hygiene, CXC 1-1969 (rev. 2020)

  4. Question 4 · Epidemiology Concepts and Methods

To compare mortality between two regions where one has an older population, which measure is most appropriate?

    1. AThe crude death rate
    2. BThe age-standardised mortality rate
    3. CThe proportionate mortality ratio for each age group
    4. DThe case fatality rate
    Show answer and explanation

Correct answer: B. The age-standardised mortality rate

Age standardisation removes the effect of different age structures so the regions can be compared fairly. The crude rate is confounded by age, and proportionate mortality and case fatality answer different questions.

Reference: CDC, Principles of Epidemiology in Public Health Practice, 3rd ed. (2012)

  5. Question 5 · Environmental Health

Which indoor pollutant, released from soil and some building materials, is the second leading cause of lung cancer after smoking?

    1. ARadon
    2. BCarbon monoxide
    3. CFormaldehyde
    4. DNitrogen dioxide
    Show answer and explanation

    Correct answer: A. Radon

Radon is a radioactive gas that seeps into buildings and is a recognised cause of lung cancer. Carbon monoxide causes poisoning, and formaldehyde and nitrogen dioxide are irritants rather than the second leading cause of lung cancer.

Reference: WHO, WHO Handbook on Indoor Radon (2009)

  6. Question 6 · Epidemiology Concepts and Methods

A survey measures blood pressure and body weight in 2,000 adults during one week. Which study design is this?

    1. AA cohort study
    2. BA cross-sectional study
    3. CA case-control study
    4. DA randomised controlled trial
    Show answer and explanation

    Correct answer: B. A cross-sectional study

A cross-sectional study measures exposure and outcome at one point in time and gives prevalence. A cohort follows people over time, a case-control starts from cases, and a trial assigns an intervention.

Reference: Gordis, Epidemiology, 6th ed. (2019)

  7. Question 7 · Insecticides and Pest Control

What is the safest way to control cockroaches in a hospital kitchen?

    1. AFogging the room with insecticide while food is left uncovered on the benches
    2. BSpraying a residual insecticide on food preparation surfaces each week at closing time
    3. CLeaving open food waste out overnight to attract the insects to a trap
    4. DBetter sanitation and sealed cracks, with gel baits set by a licensed operator
    Show answer and explanation

Correct answer: D. Better sanitation and sealed cracks, with gel baits set by a licensed operator

Integrated control starts with removing food and shelter, then uses targeted baits placed away from food. Fogging or spraying food surfaces contaminates food, and open waste attracts more pests.

Reference: WHO, Public Health Significance of Urban Pests (2008)

  8. Question 8 · Public Health and Safety

After a power cut, the vaccine refrigerator reads 12 degrees Celsius. What is the correct first action?

    1. AUse the vaccines first, because warmth does not affect their potency
    2. BLabel them do not use, keep them cold and ask the programme for advice
    3. CPlace them in the freezer to bring the temperature down quickly
    4. DDiscard them at once without recording the event
    Show answer and explanation

Correct answer: B. Label them do not use, keep them cold and ask the programme for advice

Vaccines exposed to a temperature excursion are quarantined while the programme judges their stability, with the event recorded. Using them, freezing them or throwing them away unrecorded risks ineffective vaccine or avoidable waste.

Reference: WHO, Immunization in Practice, 2015 update

  9. Question 9 · Public Health and Safety

A health centre works with the local school, the municipality and the water authority to reduce diarrhoea in children. Which primary health care principle does this show?

    1. AAppropriate technology
    2. BEquitable distribution of services
    3. CIntersectoral collaboration
    4. DA curative focus in hospitals
    Show answer and explanation

    Correct answer: C. Intersectoral collaboration

Working with other sectors such as education, local government and water reflects intersectoral action. Appropriate technology, equity and a curative focus describe other principles or are not primary health care principles.

Reference: WHO and UNICEF, Declaration of Alma-Ata (1978)

  10. Question 10 · Medical Waste Disposal

Where should a used syringe with its needle attached be placed immediately after an injection?

    1. AIn a yellow clinical waste bag after the needle has been recapped
    2. BIn the general waste bin once the syringe is empty
    3. COn a tray for later collection by the cleaner
    4. DIn a puncture-resistant sharps container at the point of use
    Show answer and explanation

Correct answer: D. In a puncture-resistant sharps container at the point of use

Needles go straight into a sharps container at the point of use, with no recapping, to prevent injuries. Bags and general bins can be pierced, and trays leave sharps exposed to staff.

Reference: WHO, Safe Management of Wastes from Health-Care Activities, 2nd ed. (2014)

Frequently asked questions

Is this Public Health Technician mock test really free?
Yes. All 25 questions, your score, the domain breakdown and the full worked answers are free, with no sign-up, no email and no payment. The paid Public Health Technician bank is a separate, much larger set of 450+ questions across 3 to 6 papers at AED 269.
Are these real Public Health Technician exam questions?
No. They are original questions written to the published Public Health Technician blueprint and drawn from our full bank, not leaked or recalled items. Recalled questions breach exam security rules and are often out of date. These follow the exam's format and domain weighting.
What is the pass mark for the Public Health Technician exam?
By regulator: SCFHS (pass mark 55%), each from the regulator's own exam documents. Regulators not listed publish no figure for this exam, so confirm yours before booking. Most report only pass or fail and never release your score, which is why a diagnostic like this is useful.
How long is the Public Health Technician exam and how many questions?
SCFHS: 150 MCQs in 180 minutes, from each regulator's own exam documents. Regulators not listed publish no length for this exam, so confirm theirs in the current candidate bulletin.
What topics does the Public Health Technician exam cover?
The published blueprint has 11 domains and 57 testable sub-topics. The heaviest are Environmental Health (~15%), Epidemiology Concepts and Methods (~15%) and Infection Control and Disease Reporting (~15%). The full domain list with weights is on this page.
How is the full Public Health Technician bank different from this mock?
This mock is 25 questions across 11 of the 11 blueprint domains, enough to rank your domains. The full bank is 450+ questions in 3 to 6 full-length papers of about 150 questions, covering every domain, with about 68 questions on Environmental Health alone. Every question has a worked rationale and a reference. It costs AED 269, paid once.
What score should I aim for on this Public Health Technician mock?
Aim for at least 65%, which is 10 points over the 55% SCFHS pass mark. Below 50% you would likely fall short today; between 50% and 64% a few questions decide it. On 25 questions a score near the pass mark has a margin of error of about ±20 points, so read it as a direction.
Does passing this mock mean I will pass the real exam?
No, and we will not claim otherwise. 25 questions cannot predict a full-length paper: the margin of error is about ±20 points. What it does reliably show is which blueprint domains you are weakest in, so you know where to start.
Which regulators is this Public Health Technician mock for?
It is written to the shared Public Health Technician blueprint, so it fits SCFHS. SCFHS publishes an exam for this exact title. What changes by regulator is the length, the pass mark and the local regulation questions.
How many attempts do I get at the real exam?
In the UAE, three in total across DHA, DOH, MOHAP and SHA under the Unified Professional Qualification Requirements, not three per authority. Each attempt costs roughly AED 880, which is why it pays to find your weak domains first.
