  • You get 72 seconds per question, the pace of a 150-question paper in 3 hours. The timer runs in your browser and ends the sitting when it reaches zero.
  • Your score is set against the 50% SCFHS pass mark, the published figure for this exam. No other number is invented: there is no percentile and no pass probability.
  • At the end you see your score, your pace per question, every domain ranked weakest first, and the worked answer and source for all 25 questions.
  • You can mark each answer “sure” or “not sure”. Wrong answers you were sure about are shown first, because they are the ones you would not stop to check in the real exam.
  • Your last result is saved in your own browser only, so you can come back and compare. Nothing is sent to us.

What the real Genomic & Biotechnology Technician licensing exam looks like

The Genomic & Biotechnology Technician exam is a computer-based multiple-choice paper, published by one regulator: SCFHS (pass mark 50%). Every regulator's format, pass mark and fee is in the table below; confirm yours before booking.

Pass marks at a glance: exam codes and pass marks by regulator for every written exam in one sourced table.

Before you can book the exam at all you need Dataflow primary source verification of your degree, licence and experience, which typically runs several weeks. Candidates often underestimate this and end up sitting the exam sooner after study than they planned. Check where you stand with our free eligibility checker or confirm whether your title even requires an exam using the Prometric exam checker.

You get three attempts in total across all UAE authorities, not three each, under the Unified Professional Qualification Requirements. At roughly AED 880 per attempt, plus the licensing delay each failure adds to your visa and start date, the cost of going in underprepared is not really the exam fee.

How to use your mock score

These bands are set against the 50% SCFHS pass mark and match the verdict on your result screen. On 25 questions, a score near the pass mark has a 95% margin of error of about ±20 points, so treat the band as a direction, not a forecast.

Below 45%

Below the line

On this sample you would likely fall short of the 50% pass mark today. Do not book yet. Start with your two weakest domains from the result, then sit full-length papers until you clear the line with room to spare.

45% to 59%

Close to the line

A few questions decide it. On a 150-question paper, every 1% is one or two questions, so drill your weakest domains and build a margin on timed papers before you book.

60% and above

On track

Clear of the pass mark on this sample. 25 questions is a small sample, so confirm it over full-length timed papers before you book: stamina and pacing fail candidates who know the material.

Getting an honest score

  1. 1Sit it cold, once. Do not look anything up. A diagnostic you help yourself through tells you nothing. The number you get is only useful if it is honest.
  2. 2Read every rationale, especially the ones you got right. Getting a question right by elimination is not the same as knowing it. The worked reasoning is free, whether or not you buy anything.
  3. 3Work on your weakest domain first. The breakdown orders your domains worst first for exactly this reason. Studying what you are already good at feels productive and moves nothing.
  4. 4Re-sit under full exam conditions later. The real paper is much longer than 25 questions and stamina matters. The full bank's 3 to 6 papers are written for exactly this.

A worked Genomic & Biotechnology Technician exam question

Every question in the mock and in the paid bank is written to this standard: a clinical stem, four plausible options and the reasoning for the answer, with its source.

Basic Laboratory Skills

A technician must prepare 500 mL of 0.5 M sodium chloride (molar mass 58.44 g/mol). How much NaCl should be weighed?

  1. A29.22 g
  2. B7.31 g
  3. C58.44 g
  4. D14.61 gCorrect

Why: Moles needed = 0.5 mol/L x 0.5 L = 0.25 mol, and 0.25 x 58.44 = 14.61 g. 29.22 g is for 1 litre, 7.31 g is for 250 mL, and 58.44 g is a full mole.

  1. Question 1 · Basic Laboratory Skills

Human cell lines are handled at biosafety level 2. Why is a Class II biological safety cabinet preferred for this work?

    1. AHEPA-filtered airflow protects the operator, the cells and the environment
    2. BIt sterilises the work surface with ultraviolet light
    3. CIt removes chemical vapours by exhausting room air
    4. DIt maintains a constant 37 degree Celsius temperature for cell growth
    Show answer and explanation

Correct answer: A. HEPA-filtered airflow protects the operator, the cells and the environment

Class II cabinets give inward airflow for the operator, HEPA-filtered downflow for the product and filtered exhaust for the environment. UV is only an adjunct, they do not protect against volatile chemicals, and they do not provide an incubator temperature.

  2. Question 2 · Biotechnology

A gene therapy design needs stable, long-term expression in dividing cells. Which vector choice fits best?

    1. AAn AAV vector, because it integrates at random in dividing cells
    2. BA lentiviral vector, because it integrates into the host genome
    3. CA naked plasmid, because it replicates forever in human cells
    4. DAn adenoviral vector, because it persists unchanged for years
    Show answer and explanation

Correct answer: B. A lentiviral vector, because it integrates into the host genome

Lentiviral vectors integrate and so are passed on to daughter cells. AAV genomes stay mostly episomal and are diluted in dividing cells, plasmids are lost, and adenoviral genomes also remain episomal and are transient.

  3. Question 3 · Biotechnology

Myeloma cells and B cells have been fused and are now grown in HAT medium. What does the medium achieve?

    1. AIt kills unfused B cells while the myeloma cells survive and grow
    2. BIt selects for cells that lack antibody genes
    3. CIt kills unfused myeloma cells, so that hybrids survive
    4. DIt stops the cells in the dish from dividing
    Show answer and explanation

Correct answer: C. It kills unfused myeloma cells, so that hybrids survive

Myeloma partners lack HGPRT and cannot use the salvage pathway when aminopterin blocks the de novo pathway, while unfused B cells die naturally. Only hybrids survive.

Reference: Kohler and Milstein, Nature 1975;256:495-497

  4. Question 4 · Bioinformatics

In a VCF file, a genotype field reads 0/1. What does it mean?

    1. AThe sample is homozygous for the reference allele at this position in both copies
    2. BThe sample is homozygous for the alternate allele at this position in both copies
    3. CThe sample is heterozygous: one reference and one alternate allele
    4. DThe genotype could not be called because of too few supporting reads
    Show answer and explanation

Correct answer: C. The sample is heterozygous: one reference and one alternate allele

0/1 means one reference and one alternate allele. 0/0 is homozygous reference, 1/1 is homozygous alternate and ./. is a missing call.

Reference: Danecek et al., Bioinformatics 2011;27:2156-2158

  5. Question 5 · Basic Laboratory Skills

A technician receives a new flammable solvent and is unsure how to store it safely. Which document gives product-specific storage, incompatibility and spill-response information?

    1. AThe manufacturer's safety data sheet for that exact product
    2. BThe product price list and ordering page in the supplier catalogue
    3. CThe label of a similar solvent already on the shelf
    4. DThe service manual of the fume hood
    Show answer and explanation

Correct answer: A. The manufacturer's safety data sheet for that exact product

The safety data sheet is the standard source of hazards, storage, incompatibilities and spill response for a specific product. A price list has no safety content, a similar product may have different hazards, and a hood manual covers the equipment only.

  6. Question 6 · Biotechnology

A vector is cut with a single restriction enzyme and then treated with alkaline phosphatase before ligation with an insert. What is the purpose of the phosphatase step?

    1. AIt adds phosphate groups so that ligase works faster
    2. BIt removes 5' phosphates so the vector cannot re-close
    3. CIt cuts the insert at a second site to match the vector
    4. DIt destroys the restriction enzyme left in the tube
    Show answer and explanation

Correct answer: B. It removes 5' phosphates so the vector cannot re-close

A vector cut at one site has compatible ends and can simply re-close. Removing its 5' phosphates blocks this because ligase needs them, while the insert still supplies phosphates. Phosphatase does not add phosphates, cut DNA or inactivate the restriction enzyme.

Reference: Green and Sambrook, Molecular Cloning: A Laboratory Manual, 4th ed., 2012

  7. Question 7 · Genomics

A man with an X-linked recessive disorder has children with a woman who is not a carrier. What is the expected outcome?

    1. ASons are affected and daughters are unaffected non-carriers
    2. BHalf of the sons are affected and half of the daughters are carriers
    3. CDaughters are carriers and sons are unaffected
    4. DNeither sons nor daughters inherit the variant
    Show answer and explanation

Correct answer: C. Daughters are carriers and sons are unaffected

A father passes his X chromosome to every daughter and his Y to every son. Daughters therefore carry the variant, and sons get a normal X from the mother. The other options describe a carrier mother or autosomal inheritance.

Reference: Strachan and Read, Human Molecular Genetics, 5th ed., 2018

  8. Question 8 · Bioinformatics

After large FASTQ files are copied from the sequencer to a server, which check best shows that the copies are not corrupted?

    1. ACompare the file names and creation dates in the folder listing
    2. BOpen the first ten reads and read them by eye
    3. CCheck that the copy has the same file extension
    4. DCompare checksums, for example MD5, of the original and the copy
    Show answer and explanation

Correct answer: D. Compare checksums, for example MD5, of the original and the copy

A checksum changes if even one bit differs, so matching values show the copy is identical. Names, dates and extensions can match while content is damaged, and viewing a few reads cannot detect corruption deeper in the file.

Reference: Buffalo, Bioinformatics Data Skills, 2015

  9. Question 9 · Bioinformatics

FastQC shows base quality falling below Q20 in the last 20 positions of 150-base reads. Which step usually comes next?

    1. ADiscard the whole run and repeat the sequencing
    2. BConvert the FASTQ files to FASTA format so that the quality problem is removed
    3. CTrim the low-quality ends, and any adapter sequence, before alignment
    4. DAlign as they are, because aligners ignore base quality
    Show answer and explanation

Correct answer: C. Trim the low-quality ends, and any adapter sequence, before alignment

Quality usually declines toward the 3' end, and trimming those bases keeps most of the data and avoids false mismatches. A run is rarely discarded for this, FASTA drops the quality information, and aligners do use base quality.

Reference: Bolger, Lohse and Usadel, Trimmomatic: a flexible trimmer for Illumina sequence data, Bioinformatics, 2014

  10. Question 10 · Professional Practice/ Ethics

Exome sequencing for a child's epilepsy reveals a pathogenic variant in a hereditary cancer gene, unrelated to the test request. What should the technician do?

    1. ATelephone the parents directly to tell them about the finding
    2. BDelete the variant from the data because it is outside the request
    3. CAdd the variant to a shared research database for other groups
    4. DRecord it and refer it to the clinical geneticist
    Show answer and explanation

Correct answer: D. Record it and refer it to the clinical geneticist

Unrequested findings are handled under the consent form and the laboratory's policy by the responsible clinical staff. A technician should not disclose results, delete data or share identifiable findings without consent.

Frequently asked questions

Is this Genomic & Biotechnology Technician mock test really free?
Yes. All 25 questions, your score, the domain breakdown and the full worked answers are free, with no sign-up, no email and no payment. The paid Genomic & Biotechnology Technician bank is a separate, much larger set of 450+ questions across 3 to 6 papers at AED 269.
Are these real Genomic & Biotechnology Technician exam questions?
No. They are original questions written to the published Genomic & Biotechnology Technician blueprint and drawn from our full bank, not leaked or recalled items. Recalled questions breach exam security rules and are often out of date. These follow the exam's format and domain weighting.
What is the pass mark for the Genomic & Biotechnology Technician exam?
By regulator: SCFHS (pass mark 50%), each from the regulator's own exam documents. Regulators not listed publish no figure for this exam, so confirm yours before booking. Most report only pass or fail and never release your score, which is why a diagnostic like this is useful.
How long is the Genomic & Biotechnology Technician exam and how many questions?
SCFHS: 150 MCQs in 180 minutes, from each regulator's own exam documents. Regulators not listed publish no length for this exam, so confirm theirs in the current candidate bulletin.
What topics does the Genomic & Biotechnology Technician exam cover?
The published blueprint has 6 domains and 64 testable sub-topics. The heaviest are Biotechnology (~29%), Molecular Techniques (~17%) and Genomics (~17%). The full domain list with weights is on this page.
How is the full Genomic & Biotechnology Technician bank different from this mock?
This mock is 25 questions across 6 of the 6 blueprint domains, enough to rank your domains. The full bank is 450+ questions in 3 to 6 full-length papers of about 150 questions, covering every domain, with about 131 questions on Biotechnology alone. Every question has a worked rationale and a reference. It costs AED 269, paid once.
What score should I aim for on this Genomic & Biotechnology Technician mock?
Aim for at least 60%, which is 10 points over the 50% SCFHS pass mark. Below 45% you would likely fall short today; between 45% and 59% a few questions decide it. On 25 questions a score near the pass mark has a margin of error of about ±20 points, so read it as a direction.
Does passing this mock mean I will pass the real exam?
No, and we will not claim otherwise. 25 questions cannot predict a full-length paper: the margin of error is about ±20 points. What it does reliably show is which blueprint domains you are weakest in, so you know where to start.
Which regulators is this Genomic & Biotechnology Technician mock for?
It is written to the shared Genomic & Biotechnology Technician blueprint, so it fits SCFHS. SCFHS publishes an exam for this exact title. What changes by regulator is the length, the pass mark and the local regulation questions.
How many attempts do I get at the real exam?
In the UAE, three in total across DHA, DOH, MOHAP and SHA under the Unified Professional Qualification Requirements, not three per authority. Each attempt costs roughly AED 880, which is why it pays to find your weak domains first.
