Overview of SQH Salalah
Sultan Qaboos Hospital in Salalah is the Oman Ministry of Health's governorate hospital for Dhofar and the main government hospital in the south of the country. The Ministry dates it to 1976 and lists about 515 beds including its cardiac centre. It is the referral point for the region's primary health care centres and for patients from Dhofar's wilayats.
The hospital covers the main specialties under one roof. Internal medicine includes neurology, nephrology, chest medicine, endocrinology, gastroenterology, psychiatry and dermatology; general surgery includes neurosurgery, orthopaedics, urology, ophthalmology and ENT. It also runs obstetrics and gynaecology, paediatrics, cardiology, cardiothoracic surgery, intensive care, emergency services, radiology, laboratories and pharmacy. A separate cardiac centre has its own adult and paediatric outpatient clinics, catheterisation and cardiac imaging.
Sultan Qaboos Hospital is busy. The Ministry reports about 63,000 adult emergency visits, 49,000 paediatric emergency visits and 7,000 obstetric emergency visits a year, with roughly 27,800 admissions and 279,000 outpatient visits. It is recognised at level two of the WHO Patient Safety Friendly Hospital Initiative.
A replacement hospital is being built in Salalah. In June 2026 the Ministry's Director General of Projects and Engineering Services said the new Sultan Qaboos Hospital, a seven-storey, 700-bed building on a 100,000 square metre site, had passed 90% completion and was expected to begin operating in the last quarter of 2026. It is planned to include emergency care, imaging, chemotherapy, dialysis, burns treatment, rehabilitation and adult, paediatric and neonatal intensive care.
The hospital's medical staff come from Oman and many other countries, including India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Egypt, Sudan, the Philippines and Sri Lanka. For expatriate professionals, it is one of the main government employers outside Muscat, and the move to the larger building is the development to watch for anyone tracking Sultan Qaboos Hospital Salalah vacancies.

Salalah also has a lower cost of living than Muscat. The planned move to a 700-bed hospital is expected to need more staff, but the Ministry has not published recruitment numbers, so treat any agency claim of guaranteed Salalah posts with caution.

Typical Roles
Hiring Process
Sultan Qaboos Hospital does not run its own careers portal; vacancies are filled by the Oman Ministry of Health. Expatriate posts are advertised through Ministry job announcements on moh.gov.om and through Ministry recruitment of non-Omanis, often with recruitment drives or agencies in source countries; Omani nationals apply through national government recruitment announcements. Once selected, you register on the Ministry's Health Practitioners Registration e-Service (eportal.moh.gov.om), which is free and takes about five working days once your file is complete. Your certificates go through DataFlow primary source verification, and you sit the Oman Medical Specialty Board (OMSB) Occupational Classification exam for your profession, booked through Pearson VUE. After approval, the Ministry issues the electronic letter used for the Royal Oman Police visa.
Neelim's career guidance team can help you navigate this process and prepare for interviews.
