Overview of Al Jalila Children's
Al Jalila Children's Specialty Hospital in Al Jaddaf, Dubai, is the UAE's first dedicated children's hospital. It was commissioned by Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum in December 2008 to mark the first birthday of his daughter, Sheikh Al Jalila, and opened in late 2016 as a 200-bed tertiary and quaternary paediatric hospital.
The hospital is part of Dubai Health, the integrated academic health system created as the Dubai Academic Health Corporation under Law No. 13 of 2021, which also runs Rashid, Dubai, Latifa and Hatta hospitals, Mohammed Bin Rashid University of Medicine and Health Sciences and the Al Jalila Foundation. It treats children from birth to 18 years and runs a 24/7 paediatric emergency department.
Al Jalila Children's has introduced several firsts for the UAE. In 2020 it launched the country's first comprehensive paediatric organ transplant centre for kidney, liver, heart and bone marrow diseases, and introduced gene therapy for spinal muscular atrophy (SMA), a programme it describes as one of the largest in the world, having treated close to 90 children from 13 countries by mid-2024. Its genomics centre, the first paediatric clinical genomics centre in the UAE, holds CAP laboratory accreditation.
The hospital earned JCI accreditation for the first time in July 2023, when Dubai Health's hospitals and primary care centres were accredited together. In Newsweek's Best Specialized Hospitals Middle East 2026 ranking it was placed first in the region for paediatrics, and its departments have won the Hamdan Award for an Outstanding Clinical Department in the public sector.
For nurses, doctors and allied health professionals who want to specialise in children's care, Al Jalila offers paediatric critical care, cardiac, oncology, transplant and neonatal experience on a scale few hospitals in the Gulf can match.
