A short diagnostic cannot predict whether you will pass - only the real exam does that. It will show you, honestly, where you currently stand.

What the real Orthopedic Surgery licensing exam looks like

Orthopedic Surgerys applying to practise in the UAE sit a computer-based multiple-choice examination - DHA exam code ORT5971, delivered through Prometric for DHA, MOHAP and SHA, and through Pearson VUE for DOH Abu Dhabi. The pass mark is 60%, and the result is reported to you as pass or fail only - your score is never released.

The paper is built to a published blueprint, which is why a domain-by-domain diagnostic is more useful than a raw percentage. Your questions above were drawn one per domain across Adult Reconstruction - Arthritis & Arthroplasty, Musculoskeletal Infection, Basic Science & Principles of Orthopedics, Patient Safety, Professionalism, Ethics & Evidence-Based Practice and 9 more - the same areas the real paper weights.

Before you can book the exam at all you need Dataflow primary source verification of your degree, licence and experience, which typically runs several weeks. Candidates routinely underestimate this and end up sitting the exam sooner after study than they planned. Check where you stand with our free eligibility checker or confirm whether your title even requires an exam using the Prometric exam checker.

You get three attempts in total across all UAE authorities - not three each - under the Unified Professional Qualification Requirements. At roughly AED 1,030 per attempt, plus the licensing delay each failure adds to your visa and start date, the cost of going in underprepared is not really the exam fee.

What is on the Orthopedic Surgery exam: the full blueprint

The published blueprint splits into 13 domains and 242 testable sub-topics. The diagnostic above samples across all of them, which is why its breakdown maps onto the structure the real paper is built from.

Questions
~150 (DHA Specialist Orthopedic Surgery = 150, code ORT5971; QCHP specialty papers typically 150; OMSB theory reported at 100)
Duration
3 hours (DHA 3 hrs inclusive of registration and introduction; NHRA 3 hrs seating / 2.5 hrs testing; OMSB 2.5 hrs)
Pass mark
65% (DHA orthopedic surgery and OMSB); 60% is the common baseline for generalist papers (QCHP GP cut score), with specialty papers often set at 65%

Single-best-answer MCQs, four options, no negative marking, computer-delivered. DHA/MOHAP/SCFHS/QCHP/NHRA/OMSB deliver through Prometric; DOH Abu Dhabi delivers through Pearson VUE. DHA result is reported as PASS/FAIL only - the numeric score is not shared with the applicant. DHA reserves the right to change the content, format or pass score without republishing the guideline. Consultant-level candidates at DHA (and senior surgical titles at DOH/MOHAP) sit an ORAL panel instead of, or in addition to, the CBT: minimum 20-30 minutes, at least 5 clinical scenarios, at least 2 examiners, conducted in English, with the surgical logbook validated by the panel. OMSB requires the viva after passing the MCQ for every specialty. SCFHS consultant classification is a case-based panel interview (reported as 2 x 30 minutes online). Published DHA references for this specialty: Hoppenfeld/DeBoer/Buckley Surgical Exposures in Orthopaedics; Apley's System of Orthopaedics and Fractures; Miller & Brinker Review of Orthopaedics; Rockwood & Green's Fractures in Adults and in Children; Campbell's Operative Orthopaedics; Orthopaedic Knowledge Update (OKU).

A worked Orthopedic Surgery exam question

Every question in the diagnostic and in the paid bank is written to this standard: a clinical stem, four plausible options and the reasoning for the answer, with its source.

Adult Reconstruction - Arthritis & Arthroplasty

A 41-year-old woman with sickle cell disease has increasing left hip pain. A frog-leg lateral radiograph shows a subchondral radiolucent 'crescent sign' in the femoral head, but the head remains spherical and the joint space is preserved. Which statement about this finding is correct?

  1. AIt represents a subchondral fracture and predicts imminent femoral head collapseCorrect
  2. BIt represents Ficat stage I disease and radiographs are typically normal at this stage
  3. CIt indicates secondary degenerative change with acetabular involvement
  4. DIt is a normal variant of the femoral head and requires no follow-up

Why: The crescent sign is a subchondral fracture beneath the necrotic segment and defines Ficat stage III, the point at which head collapse becomes very likely and joint-preserving procedures such as core decompression have markedly worse results. Ficat stage I has normal radiographs, acetabular involvement with joint space loss is stage IV, and the crescent sign is never a normal variant.

How to use this diagnostic properly

  1. 1Sit it cold, once. Do not look anything up. A diagnostic you help yourself through tells you nothing. The number you get is only useful if it is honest.
  2. 2Read every rationale - especially the ones you got right. Getting a question right by elimination is not the same as knowing it. The worked reasoning is free above, whether or not you buy anything.
  3. 3Work weakest domain first. The breakdown orders your domains worst-first for exactly this reason. Studying what you are already good at feels productive and moves nothing.
  4. 4Re-sit under full exam conditions later. The real paper is far longer than this and stamina matters. Full-length timed papers are what the paid bank is for.
