Ayurveda Therapist Licence in the UAE: The Real Title, 500-Hour Rule and Oral Assessment (2026)

What the UAE calls an Ayurveda or Panchakarma therapist, the 500-hour or one-year course rule, the supervision requirement, how a Kerala certificate fits, the DHA oral assessment, and what job searches do and do not tell you.

Ayurveda Therapist Licence in the UAE: The Quick Answer

If you are a Panchakarma or Abhyanga therapist from Kerala or elsewhere in India and you searched "Ayurveda therapist licence UAE", the first thing to know is that "Ayurveda Therapist" is not the official UAE title. The title in the Unified Healthcare Professional Qualification Requirements (PQR), 3rd edition, April 2025, is Ayurveda Massage Therapist (Arabic: مدلك - طب هندي تقليدي). The PQR is published jointly by MOHAP, DOH, DHA and SHA, so the title and eligibility are the same across those four authorities.

The key facts, all from the PQR and the regulators' own documents:

  • Qualification: at least 500 class hours, or a one-year Ayurveda Massage course.
  • Experience: 2 years of post-qualification experience.
  • Supervision: the therapist "shall only practice under supervision of an Ayurveda Practitioner" (PQR page 124). DOH's TCIM Scope of Practice repeats the rule and treats Ayurveda massage as panchakarma oil massage.
  • Dubai (DHA): DHA has no computer-based exam for this title. Under DHA's rule that "specialties not listed in the guideline will be assessed through an oral assessment", it goes to an oral assessment. That is a rule-based reading of the official text, not a title-specific DHA statement.
  • Abu Dhabi (DOH) and MOHAP: the title is licensed, but neither publishes the assessment mode. We say so plainly rather than guess.

Why the Title Matters: Therapist, Technician, Practitioner and Doctor

Job boards use "Ayurveda therapist", "Panchakarma therapist", "Ayurveda doctor" and "Ayurveda technician" interchangeably. Regulators do not.

You holdUAE licensing titleLevel
BAMS (5.5 years with internship)Ayurveda PractitionerPractitioner. See our BAMS, BHMS and BUMS guide
Certificate or diploma in Ayurveda therapy or massage (500 hours or more, or 1 year)Ayurveda Massage TherapistTherapist, works under an Ayurveda Practitioner
Generic massage qualification (not Ayurvedic)Massage Therapist (allied health)Licensed only by DHA, with its own exam (MAS5511)

Two points follow. First, a candidate who applies as an "Ayurveda Practitioner" with only a therapy certificate will be rejected. Second, a generic massage therapist cannot automatically use an Ayurveda title: the PQR allied chapter says "Massage Therapist will be licensed only by DHA", and DOH licenses only Ayurveda and TCM massage therapists, both under supervision.

The same therapy title also exists with different names elsewhere: Dubai Healthcare City (DHCR) uses "Ayurveda Massage Therapist", Qatar uses "Ayurveda Technician", Oman uses "TIM Technician/Therapist" and Bahrain uses "Ayurveda Technician". Search results mixing these titles are a common cause of wrong applications.

Qualification: The 500-Hour and One-Year Rules

The PQR sets two qualification tests, either of which can qualify you:

  1. At least 500 class hours in Ayurveda massage, or
  2. A one-year course in Ayurveda Massage.

In addition, the PQR requires two years of post-qualification experience, Basic Life Support (BLS) and, as with every UAE TCIM title, a valid home-country licence where one exists, transcripts showing hours and a Good Standing Certificate. Transcripts must show hours. A certificate that lists a course name and a date but no breakdown of hours is a common reason for delay.

What counts as class hours

The PQR speaks of "class hours", which we read as taught and practical hours in the programme, not hours you worked afterwards. Experience is counted separately. If your institute can issue a hours statement signed by the head of the institution, request it before you apply.

Dubai Healthcare City adds a stricter split

DHCR's CAM guideline asks for 500 hours divided as at least 125 hours of anatomy and physiology, 200 hours of massage, 40 hours of pathology and 10 hours of business and ethics. It also asks for two years of experience as a licensed massage therapist. A Kerala certificate may not map to this split cleanly. DHCR is credential review only, with no exam, according to its guideline (effective September 2019, revision dated August 2022, so check for updates).

The Kerala Certificate Question

Many candidates ask whether a Kerala-issued certificate is accepted. We found no UAE regulator document that names Kerala or any other Indian state, so no regulator has said "Kerala certificates are accepted" or "rejected". What we can verify is how a well-known Kerala programme compares to the hours rule.

The Government of Kerala-backed Additional Skill Acquisition Programme (ASAP Kerala) offers a Certificate Course in Ayurveda Therapy listed at 1,200 hours: six months of classroom learning plus three months of hospital internship, at NSQF level 4. On hours alone it clears the PQR's 500-hour test.

Passing the hours test is not the same as being licensed:

  • You still need two years of post-qualification experience.
  • DHCR may want the 500 hours split into its own categories, as above.
  • DataFlow must verify the certificate with the issuing institution, so it needs to be verifiable and the name on it must match your passport.
  • Private institute certificates with no formal accreditation are the highest-risk documents. We cannot say which ones regulators accept, because no list is published.

Read our DataFlow guide to see how verification works, and our licensing document checklist for what to collect.

Working Under Supervision: What It Means in Practice

The supervision rule is the most commercially important part of the title. The PQR text says the Ayurveda Massage Therapist may practise only under the supervision of an Ayurveda Practitioner. DOH's scope document says the same. In practice:

  • You cannot open an independent therapy centre on this title. The facility needs a licensed Ayurveda Practitioner whose licence covers the supervision.
  • Your employer's facility licence should list Ayurveda services, and the supervising practitioner should be on staff or contracted.
  • Scope is therapy and massage, not diagnosis or prescribing. Qatar's equivalent title defines scope as Abhyanga, Shirodhara, Swedana, Kizhi and Nasya, strictly under a licensed practitioner. The UAE PQR does not list techniques the same way, so the DOH scope of practice is the better guide for Abu Dhabi.

Before accepting an offer, ask who the supervising Ayurveda Practitioner is, which authority licensed the facility, and whether the employer has already filed your application under the correct title. Our contract red flags guide covers other points to check.

The DHA Oral Assessment

Because DHA has no Ayurveda Massage Therapist computer-based exam, the DHA route is an oral assessment. The format below comes from the Unified PQR (section 1.5.3.2) and DHA's Professional Assessment Manual (2025):

  • At least five scenarios or questions, asked in English, with no translator.
  • A panel of at least two assessors, a session of 20 to 30 minutes, held virtually, with a unanimous pass or fail.
  • Up to three attempts across all UAE authorities, plus one final attempt at a different authority.

DHA's oral-assessment fee for this title is not published in anything we found, and we do not quote one.

What to prepare

Expect scenario questions on patient assessment before treatment, contraindications for oil massage, hygiene and infection control, consent and privacy, escalation to the supervising practitioner and emergency handling. These are our preparation suggestions, not a published DHA syllabus. The best practice is to rehearse out loud with a clinician in English, using realistic cases from your own work.

We do not sell an MCQ bank for this title, because there is no multiple-choice exam to practise for. If you also hold BAMS and want the Practitioner title, the DHA Ayurveda exam bank (PAY5852) applies instead.

For DOH and MOHAP, ask the regulator directly. DOH's licensing contact is HCWS@doh.gov.ae, and MOHAP's evaluation page names a TCAM evaluation fee of AED 300 but no exam format.

Jobs and Salary: What People Search For

Candidates search for "Ayurveda therapist vacancy in Dubai for female", "Panchakarma therapist vacancy in Dubai for freshers", "Ayurveda therapist vacancy in Abu Dhabi hospital" and "Ayurveda therapist salary in Dubai". Search data confirms these queries are common, but it does not give pay figures, and we found no official salary source, so we give no salary numbers.

What the regulations do tell you:

  • "Freshers" ads and the PQR. The title needs two years of post-qualification experience. An ad that welcomes freshers may not be for this licensed title at all, or the employer may be planning a different route. We cannot tell from the ad, so ask the employer which licensing title and authority they will file under.
  • Female-only posts. Some listings ask for female therapists. Nothing in the PQR text we read makes gender part of the licensing rules, so treat it as the employer's requirement.
  • Hospital and clinic employers file the licence through the authority that licenses their facility, so confirm whether that is DHA, DOH or MOHAP before you assume the DHA oral applies to you.

Never pay an agent for a "guaranteed licence". The licence is issued by the regulator after verification and assessment.

Step-by-Step Checklist

  1. Confirm the title: Ayurveda Massage Therapist, not Practitioner.
  2. Check your hours: 500 hours or a one-year course, with a transcript showing hours.
  3. Check experience: 2 years after qualification, with employer letters.
  4. Get a valid BLS certificate and a Good Standing Certificate if your home registration provides one.
  5. Confirm the supervising Ayurveda Practitioner at your employer.
  6. Start DataFlow verification early.
  7. Confirm the assessment mode with the authority your employer is filing through. For DHA, prepare for the oral in English.
  8. Do not start work until the licence is issued.

Frequently Asked Questions

Ayurveda Massage Therapist. It appears in the Unified PQR (April 2025) shared by MOHAP, DOH, DHA and SHA. Ayurveda Therapist is not an official title.

At least 500 class hours, or a one-year Ayurveda Massage course, plus two years of post-qualification experience.

No UAE regulator document names Kerala or any state, so acceptance is not stated either way. The ASAP Kerala Certificate Course in Ayurveda Therapy is listed at 1,200 hours, which clears the 500-hour test, but you still need two years of experience and DataFlow must be able to verify the certificate.

Yes. The PQR says the therapist shall only practise under the supervision of an Ayurveda Practitioner, and DOH's scope of practice repeats the rule.

DHA has no computer-based exam for this title. Under DHA's residual rule it goes to an oral assessment: at least five scenarios in English, with up to three attempts across all UAE authorities. The oral-assessment fee is not published.

Neither publishes an assessment mode for this title. Ask the regulator before you pay any fee.

Not under an Ayurveda title. Saudi Arabia's NCCAM licenses only cupping, acupuncture, osteopathy, chiropractic and naturopathy.

We cannot give a verified figure. Searches for Ayurveda therapist salary in Dubai are common, but no official source publishes pay, so compare written offers and confirm the licence title before you accept.
